Our Description
According to a programme note, written by the composer himself, the Dialogo is an instrumental variation on his own composition, Poème de Mallarmé, and this in turn means that it refers to Mallarmé’s poem, Renouveau (in the sense of renewal and springtime). The poet deplores that lucid Winter, a season fit for serene art, has been ousted by morbid Spring. With a heavy heart he roams the fields with their oppressive fecundity. Struck down by the perfumes of the trees he falls on his face and is content to lie there and let himself go down till his spleen has lifted. And all the while the blue skies smile at the hedge and all the birds that are around again, twittering in the sunshine. The title of the piece, ’Dialogue’, points to the fact that the flute and the vibraphone are absolutely equal partners here. One notes that the vibraphone is used as a metallophone throughout, meaning that its characteristic vibrato is never called into play.
