As so often when I arrange, I have a burning desire to realize my favourite works for smaller ensembles, and in addition constantly discovering what makes these my favourite pieces.
In this case I had been playing with my woodwind quintet the Carl Nielsen Quintet for a couple of years and when we had already played it many times, I thought we need a new Carl Nielsen work for our core repertoire. This way we could spread his amazing music, but also because this piece has a distinctive character and energy that I have never heard before.
... "Maskarade" was first performed in 1906, and was immediately a blasting success, in contrast to Nielsen's second opera "Saul & David", which only achieved modest success at the premiere, and later went more or less into oblivion. That is, "Maskarade", was a success with the audience, but the press was more reserved. Nevertheless, one can convincingly refer to "Maskarade", as Denmark's national opera. ...
