“Enjoy your takeaway!”
The movements of this work all have titles of Indian dishes we would find on our local takeaway menu. They are titles only however, and the music was not inspired by them. Instead what we have are three exciting pieces which all have modern jazz undertones and showcase the flute skilfully. Garam Masala, is rhythmic and energetic with plenty of sparkle in the notation. Asafoetida has a mellifluous melody which weaves around the flute and finishes with a beautiful piece of piano writing. Tarka is simply a virtuoso workout. It might not have Indian cuisine credentials but this work is certainly spicy. Enjoy your takeaway!
From the Publisher
Matthew van Brink:
Thomas Robertello, who commissioned the sonata, created the titles after I had finished composing, and after he had spent some time getting to know the music. Great performers inevitably possess the music they play often coming to understand the intricacies of a piece even better than the composer who wrote it. In accepting the titles, I not only gained a colorful alternative to a simple title like 'Sonata for Flute and Piano' but also nodded to Robertello's ownership of the piece.
The amusing musical-culinary associations only stay at a surface level though. The real inspiration was the simple idea of composing music that is both rigorous and whimsical, both intellectual and fun.
