A pupil of Scheidemann, Johann Adam Reincken succeeded him as organist at the Church of Saint Catherine in Hamburg as from 1663. His playing was of such a high standard that none other than J. S. Bach travelled from Lüneburg and Köthen to Hamburg to hear Reincken play the organ.
