From the Publisher

This piece was written when I was in Calheta (Madeira), with concepts for the work having devel-oped over a number of years. I asked each player in the ASQ to provide me with two multiphonic fingerings and pitches that could be played quietly. These harmonies then went into a melting pot of ideas. Trying to capture the dramatic and fast-changing landscape and weather of Calheta, the work moves from dark and dramatic to fragile and mysterious. There are numerous sections within ‘Calheta’ which are connected both by harmonic references to the multiphonics, associated quarter tones and rhythmic development and connection. The piece only settles on the final note/chord after an exploration of ensemble colours.
