“Unusual.”
It isn't often that a flute quartet will contain four solo movements but that is exactly how this piece works. Each of the solos is improvisatory in style with plenty of scope for individual interpretation, and they all highlight the character of each instrument. The quartet 'Fenway' is closely linked to the fourth solo 'Fenway Overture' creating a more structured feel towards the end of the piece. Giving each performer a chance to shine is a great idea and it allows the audience time to hear each colour separately before all the instruments play together. Unusual but very good.
From the Publisher
Commissioned by Celebrity Series of Boston for Neighborhood Arts for their 2022 Solo(s) Together commissioning project program, this 5-movement collection of four flute solos and a quartet takes the listeners on a journey through Boston’s most iconic scenes and old haunts of the composer during her studies in Boston. The work is influenced by the paintings of Boston-based African American artist, Allan Rohan Crite. His works, “Tire Jumping in Front of My Window”, ” Cambridge, Sunday Morning” and others that depict the African American experience in Boston were used as inspiration.
