“Definitely worth the investment!”
This book is worth buying for Blue Train alone. A wonderful piece of programme music, the night train of the title is captured from the very opening whistle. The journey starts with chugging quavers and it's possible to pick out the bells, whizzes and rattles that characterise an old fashioned steam engine so clearly. Marine City is much more atmospheric and uses soundscapes to take to an elusive oceanic place. There is a more contemporary style of writing used in Papillon to capture the capricious nature of the butterfly, and here there are some free passages allowing the players to create something for themselves. This is an adventurous book which will appeal to the adventurous amongst us. That's almost everyone!

Ryohei Hirose's flute orchestra trilogy consisting of the classic song "Blue Train", which is still widely loved 40 years after composition, and "Marine City" and "Papillon". He has been involved in three works since the premiere, and has corrected errors in the score after being edited by Aoki Aoki and Hiroshi Hari of the Tokyo Flute Ensemble Academy, who were also composers' allies. This edition is the first publication of the third work Papillon.
