“Very imaginative!”
This is another really imaginative piece from Wil Offermans that is very popular with players and audiences alike. Starting evocatively with tongue pizz, the slow theme appears in the first part before being expanded. The faster Bamburia rhythm is a strong one and the wonderful clapping section that comes out of it is eventually gives way to a solo flute improvisation. There is one very tricky moment for the whole ensemble which needs good players with a very strong sense of rhythm to be able to hold their own against each other. This is absolutely worth a go though - it's so good that players will completely rise to the occasion!

"A main element in "Bamburia" is the fascinating Spanish flamenco rhythm: the buleria. Basically, the buleria is a rhythm in 12-beats with the counting starting not on the 1st, but on the 11th beat. It is structured in a basic pattern with accents on the 12th, 3rd, 6th, 8th and 10th beat, like: 11-12-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10- etc. In Bamburia also a little more complex form is used: 11-12-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10- etc.
Through performing Bamburia we can learn and enjoy the buleria-rhythm. In the center part of the piece the flutists put their flute aside and perform the buleria-rhythm with clapping hands. In Spanish this is called 'palma'. A passionate flute solo - which can also be performed by one of the ensemble players - combines with the clapping to a fascinating sound. In case of a public performance the audience can participate in the clapping. The bass flute part can also be performed on flutes in C.
Bamburia was inspired by a composition with the same title which I composed for the Nakagawa Bamboo Orchestra in Fukuoka, Japan. This ensemble – directed with great enthousiasm by Matahiko Takeda – consists entirely of instruments made out of bamboo: bamboo xylophones, bamboo marimbas, giant bamboo end-hit tubes (maui), and of course bamboo flutes (shinobue). Inspired by this bamboo experience I made Bamburia for flute ensemble."
