From the Publisher

Anthology is an exploration of several concepts (the use of quarter tones, and a morphing of two main musical styles, contemporary classical and bebop) within an arching structure. A lyrical yet unsettling opening section marries tension (as phrases end with suspended quarter tones) with resolution, an exploration of colour and intervallic-led melody. Five sections of increasing tempo follow, during which harmonic language that is partly derived from the bebop era is juxtaposed with quarter tones and other more contemporary techniques associated with the saxophone. This isn’t swing though, everything is played straight, any reference to bebop is via harmonic language and articulation. A meditative closing section combines a reprise of the first heard quarter tone statement (between E & G) that is repeated with additional given pitches added ad.lib., creating an improvisatory effect. Written for saxophonist Anthony Brown, and funded by Teresa Scholtz
