This work was composed as contest piece for the clarinet exams of the Royal Chapel in Madrid. We do not know the exact date of the composition since there is no date on the existing manuscript. Eslava began working in the Royal Chapel in 1847 but as early on as 1844 onwards he was very much involved there and on many occasions substituted the Chapel Master, Rodriguez de Ledesma who was often ill during those years. It is quite possible that he composed the Andante y Allegro for the clarinet trials that were held in 1844. Those who won the post were Antonio Romero and Enrique Fischer.
