Fritz Flemming was born on March 9, 1873 in Braunschweig. He studied oboe in Paris with Georges Gillet. In 1897 he was appointed solo oboist at the Royal Opera Orchestra in Berlin. A few months later, Richard Strauss became first court music director there. Strauss, who was an advocate of the French oboe, worked closely with Flemming over the next 20 years. He often took his oboist with him when he conducted other orchestras. Flemming was a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra for a time. Flemming married Strauss' niece, which sealed their close relationship. In 1907 the university in Berlin appointed him professor. His particular achievement is the introduction of the French oboe to Germany. Because of his influence, many German oboists followed his example in the 1920s. Between 1925 and 1929, Flemming published studies and practice pieces for his instrument at the Zimmermann music publisher. He died in 1947.Performance duration (approx): 48
