From the Publisher
James Hook was one of the most successful and popular English musicians of his day. He first came to prominence around 1768-9 when he was appointed organist and composer for the popular musical entertainments that took place at the Marylebone Gardens in London, and in 1774 he took over the same post at the more famous Vauxhall Gardens where he remained for almost fifty years. He was also a composer of songs (over 2,000 in number), notably The Lass of Richmond Hill, he also composed a number of cantatas and organ concertos for Vauxhall, in addition to music for the stage, orchestral, chamber and keyboard works.
Hook also composed a fairly substantial amount of music for one, two and three flutes (all of which is being published in new editions by Piper Publications), including two sets of Twelve Duettinos for two flutes, of which this is possibly the earlier (the slightly more sophisticated Op. 42 Duettinos are available in Volume 2 of this edition). Although advertised as being suitable for two violins (as indeed they are), the violin alternative was undoubtedly a publisher's ploy to widen sales, since the idiomatic figurations in the music itself suggest that Hook intended these pieces primarily for the flute. Each Duettino is in only two movements (rather than three), hence the title. Hook's natural gift for writing light, tuneful melodies in the early-Classical galant style (in clear succession to J.C. Bach, who was highly prominent in London musical circles until his death in 1782) is as fully evident in these delightful pieces as in his songs.
