5 out of 5 “Good music, good theory”

This is an excellent book. The music is exciting and fun to play, and the section on the theory and history of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Jazz is very well written.

The technical level of the pieces is about Grade 6 onwards, especially at the speed they play them at on the accompanying play-along CD.

I feel that I will learn a lot by playing through these tunes, and performing the exercises suggested in the theory section. This book will help many aspiring "jazzers" on their road to understanding and mastering Latin Jazz techniques. I also think it will be useful for accomplished players of North American or European Jazz and contemporary music to cross over to the Latin styles of playing, so by no means is it just a guide for intermediate-level players. There's enough didactic material in this volume to keep advanced students busy as well!
