“Disappointing layout”
The Boccaccini & Spada edition of the E min concerto has been out of print for quite some time due to unforseen circumstances with the publisher. However, as this newly engraved edition has now appeared I was anxious to secure a copy other than the widely available alternative Zerboni edition. Although having a nice and clean appearance with a quality feel (almost laid) on a cream stock the consideration of page turns for the flute part is poor. With many blank pages available in the flute part the first and second movements should have started on a left hand page. The final movement would be tricky to split effectively and genuinely presents a challenge but not an insurmountable one. Of course if you have a photographic memory then considerations of page breaks is somewhat irrelevant. As a piece which is more commonly played than the D major it is a challenging delight. It is a worthy and possibly neglected concerto of the mainstream flute repertoire but a lovely companion to the D major nonetheless.
