“Challenging but so worth it!”
Each of these fifteen pieces has been written by my great friend Hilary Taggart with some technical difficulty in mind. And I do mean difficulty - this is not a book for the faint-hearted. For example, Carnival is for octaves but also alternates between 2/4 and 3/8 and reaches 6 sharps. Flutter and Fly is a very fast study in thirds requiring great third octave dexterity. Habanera (high note subtlety) is just very taxing. All in all, a very stimulating alternative to the usual study fare and I shall just have to keep practicing if I am to do them any justice!
From the Publisher
Each of these idiomatic solo pieces is written to enhance a specific aspect of tone production and technique. The aim is to develop skills through an imaginative and expressive approach. First published in 2002, Pictures was immediately shortlisted for USA Flute Association New Composition Award. Since then, seven of these pieces have been on music exam syllabuses in the UK and the USA, and some still remain. “Kerry” was the piece chosen by the 2019 British Flute Society Competition Winner and was also played in the 2022 BBC Young Musician of the Year, Woodwind Final.
